Windows 10 serial USB problems The latest (January) update to Windows 10 seems to cause problems with the USB serial driver when connecting to an Arduino. I can upload a small sketch to an Arduino Mega, but larger sketches fail with an 'averdude checksum error', and I get periodic freezes when sending commands via USB serial to my 3D printer.

To communicate with a device connected via universal serial bus (USB), a computer needs the driver, not just for the device itself, but also for the USB controller. Microsoft Windows uses USB universal, enhanced and eXtensible controllers; this enables businesses to connect and use legacy, high-speed and SuperSpeed plug-and-play hardware from the same PC. If you've reinstalled the OS to a workstation but Windows failed to load the USB controllers, or if you want to install updated controllers because the existing drivers are malfunctioning, you can obtain the latest drivers from the manufacturer.
Fresh Install
1.Click 'Start | Control Panel | System and Security | System.' Review the information next to System Type to see if the OS is 32-bit or 64-bit.
2.Install and run an application like CPU-Z or Belarc Advisor (see Resources below) to find the system details. Select the 'Motherboard' tab or check under System Model to find the make and model of the motherboard.
3.Navigate to the motherboard manufacturer's website and browse for the model.
4.Choose your operating system from the options, and then find the USB category.
5.Download the latest version of the driver for the controller(s) from the website. Double-click the download to launch the installer.
6.Follow the steps in the wizard to complete the installation of the USB drivers. Restart the computer.
Upgrade Install
1.Click 'Start,' then 'Control Panel.' Enter 'device' into search and then click 'Device Manager.'
2.Expand 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers.' Right-click the enhanced or eXtensible host controller.
3.Select 'Update Driver Software' from the context menu. Choose 'Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software' from the options.
